Professor Hussein A. Abdullah is the Associate Director of the School of Engineering at the University of Guelph in Canada. He holds B.Sc. Honours (1981) in Mechanical Engineering, M.Sc. (1988) in Robotics and Ph.D. (1992) in Mechatronic Systems and Manufacturing. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of Ontario, Canada. Since graduating from the University of Glasgow, UK, Dr. Abdullah has gained 17 years of extensive industrial and academic working experience in the UK, Middle East and North America. Dr. Abdullah has considerable experience in higher education teaching, graduate supervision, research and innovation, curricula developing, project management, planning and policy development. He has assisted in transferring advanced manufacturing technology and automation from the university environment to the local industry.
During the last eight years, his research activities have been focused on developing robots to automate various non-industrial applications, including a therapeutic robot that assists the rehabilitation of the limbs of stroke patients. Dr. Abdullah also pursues research in mechatronic systems design, manufacturing systems, advanced automation and robotics, mechanical systems design, sensors, and intelligent systems. He has successfully acquired financial support from various funding agencies such as NSERC, NRC and OCE to support his research activities. He has published over 50 scientific papers in international journals and conferences and acted as a reviewer for many journals, conferences and research funding agencies.
In academia, Dr. Abdullah has chaired and acted as a member in a number of college and university committees. Currently, he is a member of the University of Guelph Senate and the Planning Committee. He is also a member of external committees including the Program Advisory Committee for the Bachelor of Applied Technology (BTech.), Ontario, and a member of the advisory committee on the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), in the manufacturing sector of Ontario, Canada.
